Ancient Near East, Luristan (Lorestan), c. 1200–800 BC, Northwestern Iran

A finely cast and forged bronze socketed spearhead of classic Luristan type, dating to the early Iron Age of the Iranian plateau. The triangular blade is defined by slim, tapering shoulders and a pronounced central midrib, engineered to enhance rigidity and penetrating force. The sharpened edges converge gracefully to a lethal point before transitioning into a long, folded conical socket with a straight profile and visible rear seam.

The hammered socket was designed to secure a wooden shaft, creating a durable and highly effective weapon, now bearing surface corrosion consistent with great antiquity. Spearheads of this form are characteristic of the bronze-working traditions associated with the Luristan culture, renowned for its sophisticated metal craftsmanship.

Such weapons were versatile components of ancient Near Eastern warfare. They would have equipped chariot warriors, mounted fighters, and infantry alike. Used both as thrown javelins to disrupt advancing enemies and as thrusting spears in close combat, they represent a practical balance of aerodynamic design and structural strength.

Elegant in proportion yet formidable in purpose, this spearhead stands as a compelling testament to the metallurgical expertise and martial culture of early Iron Age Iran.

Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, nicks and chipping to the blade. Encrusted earthen deposits. Size approx. 12,7cm x 3,0cm x 1,3cm.

Provenance: Swedish private collection
