Maasai people, early 20th century, Kenya or Tanzania, East Africa
Beautiful and finely aged ceremonial reed rattle, known as a kayamba, traditionally used by Maasai women. Crafted from tightly lashed dried reeds forming two flat rafts separated by thin wooden partitions, the instrument creates a shallow, box-like form filled with small rattling elements such as seeds, pebbles, or bone fragments. When held in both hands and shaken rhythmically from side to side, it produces the soft, rustling sound characteristic of Maasai ceremonial music.
The Maasai are an Indigenous pastoral people inhabiting Kenya and Tanzania, renowned for their nomadic lifestyle and rich cultural traditions. Music and dance play an essential role in Maasai ceremonial life, and the kayamba is one of the iconic instruments used in community gatherings, women’s dances, and ritual performances.
A wonderfully preserved example of traditional Maasai craftsmanship—authentic, tactile, and evocative of East Africa’s cultural heritage.
