Malines Alabaster Relief of the Entombment of Christ

Late Renaissance, c. 1520-1600 AD, Mechelen, Belgium

This exceptionally delicate small-scale alabaster relief represents the Entombment of Christ and was produced in the celebrated late Renaissance workshops of Mechelen (Malines), Belgium. Finely carved in English alabaster from Nottinghamshire and exported to Flanders, the relief demonstrates the remarkable sculptural refinement achieved by Mechelen’s specialist alabaster workshops. Executed in high relief (alto-rilievo), the figures project prominently from the background, creating pronounced shadows and an impressive sense of depth within the compact composition.

The scene depicts Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus carefully lowering the body of Christ into the sarcophagus, surrounded by the mourners and other biblical figures. Among them are the Virgin Mary and Saint John, whose presence reinforces the solemn emotional character of the scene. The delicately modelled figures, closely arranged around the body of Christ, create a sense of concentrated grief and reverence, while the deep carving gives the composition a striking three-dimensional quality.

The surface was originally enhanced with partial gilding and dark ochre polychrome details, much of which has now disappeared. The traces of the former decoration nevertheless provide an evocative impression of the relief’s original appearance, when the pale alabaster would have been enlivened by touches of colour and shimmering gilt. Such combinations of carving, gilding, and polychromy were an important feature of Northern European devotional art, transforming small reliefs into richly expressive objects of contemplation.

The relief is further distinguished by the monogram ‘NHO’, arranged around the distinctive anchor motif at the lower centre. This mark adds an intriguing element of individuality and workshop identity to an already exceptional example of Mechelen alabaster sculpture.

Small alabaster reliefs of this type were highly valued for their intimate scale, extraordinary delicacy, and suitability for private devotion. Combining the luminous quality of alabaster with deeply carved figures, traces of its original polychromy, and a profoundly important Christian subject, this Entombment offers a particularly evocative example of late Renaissance devotional sculpture from one of the period’s most renowned centres of alabaster production.

Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, nicks and chip, with fading to some finer features, and light encrustations within recessed areas. Size approx. 12,2cm x 9,3cm x 1,3cm.

Provenance: Swedish private collection. Acquired from Germany and brought to Sweden during the 1960s.
