Pre-Columbian era, Manabí Culture, Ecuador & Quimbaya Culture, Colombia, c. 1050–1500 AD
An exceptional and highly attractive group of four Pre-Columbian earthenware spindle whorls, each meticulously decorated with finely incised linear and circular motifs of remarkable precision. Carefully shaped and hand-polished, these refined objects are compelling survivals from the sophisticated textile traditions of ancient South American civilizations.
Spindle whorls—known as malacates in Mesoamerica, husos in Spanish terminology, and fusaiolae in classical archaeology—were essential tools in the production of thread and cloth, the foundation of pre-industrial economies. Mounted on a spindle shaft, these perforated weights provided balance and rotational force, enabling the transformation of cotton, maguey, or wool fibers into durable yarn. Their size and mass determined their application: smaller, lighter examples spun fine and delicate fibers, while heavier specimens were suited to coarser materials.
The present collection displays a desirable range of forms associated with regional traditions, including spheroidal, semi-spherooidal, barrel-shaped, conical, and elongated types. The decorative programs—executed through careful incision and excision—were often enhanced with white lime or pigment infill, creating a striking visual contrast against the warm terracotta surface. The crispness of the patterns speaks to both aesthetic intention and technical mastery.
Particularly noteworthy is the broader cultural context of such objects. Comparable spindle whorls from across Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru sometimes bear highly detailed depictions of botanical elements, especially the reproductive structures of economically significant crops. Representations of tomatoes and peppers (Solanaceae), gourds and squashes (Cucurbitaceae), and cotton (Gossypium barbadense) reflect the advanced agricultural knowledge and botanical observation of these societies. Such imagery underscores the deep interconnection between textile production, agriculture, and social identity.
Small in scale yet rich in meaning, this group embodies both utilitarian function and symbolic refinement. Rarely encountered as a cohesive set, these spindle whorls represent an outstanding opportunity for collectors of Pre-Columbian art, ancient textile history, and early technological innovation. A refined and culturally significant ensemble that speaks to the artistry and intellectual depth of the ancient Americas.
Excellent condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Light encrustations within recessed areas. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Size of the whorls varies from approx. 2,2cm to 3,6cm.
Provenance: Swedish private collection
