Early to late 19th century, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India.

Fabulous portable smoking pipe, hookah. The pipe's body is cast in the form of a mango fruit. The base was for smoking tobacco and would have held water. At the top and to the side cylindrical openings linked by a small curved handle with diminutive thumb-rest in the middle. The base is designed to be held in the palm of the hand so that the owner could continue to smoking as he or she moved around. Beautiful engraved decorations on the both sides. Good condition. Age-related wear, abrasion and minor corrosion. Stunning deep dark patina. Size approx. 10.8cm x 10,5cm x 4,4cm.

Provenance: Finnish private collection
