Colima Pottery Olla

Pre-Columbian Era, Colima Culture, c. 200-300 AD, Western Mexico

An absolutely gorgeous small-sized redware olla, expertly crafted with a saucer-shaped body, wide mouth, and flared lip. The handles, elegantly sculpted into the forms of two mythical creatures, add a striking symbolic and artistic dimension to the piece.

The vessel’s surface was burnished before firing, giving it a highly polished, almost reflective sheen. The rich brownish-red slip enhances its warm, earthy tones, while the thin walls and refined curvature—achieved without a potter’s wheel—exemplify the exceptional craftsmanship of Colima artisans.

Part of the West Mexican Shaft Tomb tradition, Colima ceramics were often placed in elite burials, possibly as ritual offerings for the afterlife. This exquisite example captures the grace, technical mastery, and symbolic artistry of one of Mesoamerica’s most celebrated ceramic traditions.

A rare and highly collectible artifact.
