Maya Figural Turtle Terracotta Olla
Maya Figural Turtle Terracotta Olla
Pre-Columbian era, Maya culture, c. 250-950AD, Mexico.
Superb globular terracotta olla with figural depiction of a turtle. The turtle was an important and sacred Mayan animal in regards to the creation myth of the Mayan culture. For the Maya the turtle was associated with water and with the earth. The Maya deity Pauahtun who supported the world on his shoulders is often depicted wearing a turtle shell on his head. Important God of Maize is also shown emerging from a turtle shell.
Vessels like this one were made specifically to be placed into tombs, perhaps filled with libations. The curved body and reltively thick walls are finely modelled in the absence of a potter's wheel. Wide mouth and flaring rim. Decorated with red slip painted sacred symbols. Excellent condition. Age-related wear and abrasion. Lovely encrusted patina. Mineralization on the surface. Size approx. 13,5cm x 15,5cm x 15,2cm.
