Pre-Columbian Era, Maya or Aztec Culture, c. 250–1200 AD, Mexico

A powerful gray earthenware fragment depicting the stylized face of a jaguar warrior—an iconic figure in Mesoamerican mythology and military tradition. This evocative piece likely represents a were-jaguar, a hybrid human-jaguar form often associated with spiritual transformation, shamanism, and divine power.

The warrior’s face is partially obscured by a fierce jaguar half-mask, its features expertly incised with near-geometric precision. The characteristic downturned lips, broad snout, and almond-shaped eyes are hallmark traits of the were-jaguar motif, symbolizing the fusion of man and beast. These forms are thought to express the channeling of animal strength, agility, and ferocity—traits revered by both the Maya and Aztec as essential to warriors and spiritual leaders alike.

Despite its fragmentary nature, the piece retains exceptional detail, hinting at the larger figure’s original scale and complexity. The crisp incisions and stylized facial planes speak to a highly skilled hand, conveying not only power but also ritual importance.

This fragment offers a rare and compelling glimpse into the mythic imagination of Mesoamerican cultures—ideal for collectors of Pre-Columbian art, warrior iconography, or symbolic representations of transformation and power.

Good condition. Fragment as shown. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, nicks and chip, with fading to some finer features, and light encrustations within recessed areas. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Size approx. 7,3cm x 5,7cm x 5,2cm.

Provenance: Collection of Sven Borgström (1928-2022) and Harriet Borgström (1923-2022). The object was acquired in between 1950-1970.
