Medieval Period, Crusaders Era, c. 1095–1291, Europe
Superb and imposing Medieval bronze archer’s thumb ring, dating to the era of the Crusades. This large and impressive ring features a flat-section hoop with a boldly projecting triangular flange, finely decorated with a hatched-line border, stippled dots, and a beautifully rendered recumbent lion motif. Cast in bronze and showing an attractive, age-earned patina, this functional yet symbolic object embodies both craftsmanship and battlefield utility.
Ancient and medieval archers wore thumb rings to protect the drawing thumb from the force of the bowstring. The archer would hook the thumb beneath the arrow, brace it with the first finger, and on release, the ring ensured both protection and a clean, fast glide of the string. Such rings are known in materials ranging from jade and horn to silver, bronze, and ivory. Beyond their practical role, thumb rings were also believed to serve as talismans against misfortune, illness, and malevolent forces—often engraved with motifs intended to deflect evil.
This example originates from the period of the Crusades, a series of military and religious campaigns undertaken by the Latin Church between 1095 and 1291. Objects from this era carry the deep historical resonance of a time marked by conflict, pilgrimage, and cross-cultural encounter. A finely decorated piece with both martial and apotropaic significance, and an exceptional addition to a collection of medieval arms, armour, or personal adornment.
Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age and use. A fine green patina envelops in layers of mottled grayish hues. Mineral encrustation and minimal corrosion. Size approx. 2,6cm x 2,6cm x 2,0cm.
