Ming Dynasty Pottery Miniature Food Offering

A rare and finely modelled miniature pottery food offering in the form of four peaches, created as a mingqi (spirit object) to accompany the deceased on their journey into the afterlife. Beautifully sculpted and covered in a vibrant turquoise lead glaze, this delightful funerary model formed part of the rich tradition of burial goods placed within tombs to provide nourishment, prosperity, and eternal comfort in the next world. During the Ming dynasty, the peach (táo, 桃) was among the most auspicious symbols in Chinese culture, representing longevity, immortality, renewal, and divine blessing. Closely associated with Daoist mythology, it was identified with the legendary Pantao—the Peaches of Immortality—which grew in the celestial orchard of the Queen Mother of the West (Xi Wangmu). According to tradition, these miraculous fruits ripened only once every several thousand years and granted eternal life to those fortunate enough to partake of them. Consequently, peach imagery became a popular decorative motif in Ming art, ceramics, and literature, expressing wishes for long life, health, and enduring good fortune.

The widespread production of mingqi during the Ming dynasty continued a funerary tradition that had flourished in China for well over a millennium. Miniature representations of food, vessels, animals, servants, and household furnishings were carefully arranged within tombs to recreate the comforts and necessities of daily life, ensuring that the deceased would continue to enjoy abundance, status, and security beyond death. These objects provide valuable insight into Chinese beliefs concerning the afterlife and the enduring connection between the earthly and spiritual realms.

Both visually striking and deeply symbolic, this miniature peach offering is an excellent example of Ming dynasty funerary pottery. It embodies the artistic refinement, rich iconography, and enduring spiritual traditions of imperial China, offering a fascinating glimpse into one of the world's most sophisticated ceramic and burial cultures.

Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, nicks and chip, with fading to some finer features, and light encrustations within recessed areas. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Glazing defects and firing flaws. Size approx. 5,7cm x 3,6cm x 3,3cm.
