Ming Dynasty, c. 1550–1644 AD, China

A fascinating unglazed circular high-fired earthenware roof tile end, known as a wadang, with its tubular extension now partially lost to time. Formed from a light grey fabric with fine white inclusions, the piece exhibits excellent preservation of detail and craftsmanship. The flat front is decorated in high relief with a ferocious taotie mask — a stylized monster face featuring bulging eyes beneath pronounced brows, a broad upturned nose, large flaring ears, and an open mouth exposing sharp teeth. The mane radiates around the face, enhancing its expressive and intimidating appearance. A potter’s fingerprint, still visible on the reverse, offers a rare and intimate trace of the artisan who crafted it.

In traditional Chinese architecture, such wadang tiles capped the ends of semi-cylindrical roof tiles, serving both practical and decorative functions. Beyond their structural purpose of securing the tile rows, they also conveyed auspicious symbolism. The taotie motif — an ancient emblem of power, protection, and mystery — was believed to ward off evil spirits and safeguard the household beneath. This fragment thus represents not only a fine example of Ming architectural ornamentation but also a surviving testament to the enduring symbolism embedded in Chinese decorative art.
