Pre-Columbian Era, Moche Culture, Moche Phase II–IV, c. 200–600 AD, Northern Peru

A magnificent and historically important copper alloy implement, likely a spike or lance, expertly crafted from solid arsenical copper. This piece features a robust cylindrical shaft that tapers to a sharp point, demonstrating both functional design and skilled metalwork. Substantial in weight and beautifully patinated, it reflects the technical sophistication of Moche metallurgy.

The Moche civilization, flourishing along Peru’s northern coast, was renowned for its mastery in working copper and other metals, often blending artistic form with ceremonial or utilitarian function. This rare artifact would have served a practical or possibly ritual purpose, offering a compelling connection to the ingenuity and power of one of ancient South America's most advanced cultures.

A striking and authentic example of early Andean metallurgy, perfect for collectors of Pre-Columbian or ancient weaponry and tools.

Excellent condition overall, with wear commensurate with age and use. Slightly bent form. Surfaces exhibit a heavy green patina with encrusted mineral deposits. Faint remains and impressiona of ancient textile fragments visible on the surface. Size approx. 26,0cm x 1,3cm x 1,2cm.

Provenance: Former collection of the Sune Hederström (1883-1959). Collected during his travels in South America in 1929-31. During the same time introduced in Sweden. Then inherited within the family.
