Pre-Columbian Era, Moche Culture, Phase III–IV, c. 400–600 AD, Northern Peru

A striking example of Moche ceramic artistry, this mould-made stirrup spout vessel is decorated with a sculptural scene depicting a man and woman engaged in sexual intercourse. Executed in bichrome pottery and finished with a highly burnished surface, the vessel combines expressive figural modelling with the distinctive form and technical sophistication characteristic of Moche ceramics.

The compressed vessel features a rounded, stable base and a drum-shaped body with a relatively flat shoulder, upon which the couple is modelled in the round. A characteristic stirrup-shaped handle rises above the composition, connecting to a cylindrical spout with a slightly flared rim. The spout emerges from the male figure’s posterior and curves back towards the side of the vessel, integrating the sculptural scene into the vessel’s functional design.

The couple reclines with their heads resting on a padded, pillow-like support. The woman lies on her stomach, her shoulders raised from the ground, while the man places his left hand on her back and rests his left leg across her buttocks as he positions himself behind her. Both figures have carefully modelled faces, with wide eyes and prominent lips, and wear distinctive helmet-shaped headdresses. The composition demonstrates the Moche artists’ ability to translate an intimate human encounter into a compact, three-dimensional ceramic narrative.

Although explicit in subject matter, Moche erotic pottery has attracted considerable scholarly interest beyond its sexual imagery. Researchers have proposed that such vessels may have conveyed social, ritual, or educational meanings, rather than serving solely as erotic objects. Their precise significance remains debated, and interpretations vary according to the scene depicted and its wider cultural context.

The Moche civilization flourished along the northern coast of Peru between approximately 200 and 700 AD, developing a remarkable artistic tradition distinguished by sophisticated ceramics, advanced metallurgy, and monumental architecture. Among its most recognisable creations are stirrup spout vessels, which combined practical forms with elaborate sculptural decoration. Moche potters depicted a remarkable range of subjects, including animals, supernatural beings, ceremonial activities, and episodes of everyday and intimate life. Erotic vessels form a particularly distinctive part of this tradition, offering valuable, if complex, evidence for the ways the Moche represented the human body, sexuality, and social relationships.

With its unusual sculptural composition, finely burnished surface, and boldly expressed subject matter, this vessel exemplifies the technical skill and visual imagination of Moche ceramic artists. A compelling and conversation-provoking piece of Pre-Columbian art, it offers collectors a rare opportunity to explore one of the most distinctive and debated aspects of ancient Andean visual culture.
