Nariño Pedestal Terracotta Bowl
Nariño Pedestal Terracotta Bowl
Pre-Columbian era, Nariño culture, Carchi-Nariño region, c. 800-1300AD, Colombia.
Gorgeous hand-built and highly-burnished terracotta bowl with capuli style flared pedestal displaying various geometric patterns created by using wax and liquid colored clays. Terracotta bowls, jars and ollas were typical pottery forms of the Nariño-Carchi area. They differ in size, techniques and decorative designs. Apparently, their function was to present solid or liquid food, such as fermented maize (called chicha). The area where they were used is in the neighbouring provinces: Carchi in northern Ecuador and Nariño in southwestern Colombia. Vessels were primarily used in festivals and ceremonies. Many of them stand out by being decorated with negative painting. Moderate condition. Repaired. Age-related wear, faded colors and minimal abrasion. Lovely polished patina. Size approx. 8,5cm x 15,0cm x 15,0cm.
Provenance: Finnish private collection
