Egyptian Faience Bead Necklace

New Kingdom Period to Late Period, c. 1070–600 BC, Egypt

A beautiful ancient Egyptian necklace, carefully restrung for preservation, composed of numerous small disc-shaped faience beads arranged in a balanced sequence of red, yellow, black, blue, brown, and white. The harmonious combination of colours gives the necklace a distinctive and elegant appearance, reflecting the sophisticated taste and craftsmanship of ancient Egyptian personal adornment.

Faience was one of the most distinctive and highly valued materials used by Egyptian craftsmen. Made from finely ground quartz and coated with a lustrous alkaline glaze, faience could produce brilliant turquoise, green, and blue surfaces that visually recalled precious stones such as turquoise and lapis lazuli. These luminous colours carried important associations with fertility, regeneration, renewal, and eternal life, while the use of contrasting colours added both visual richness and symbolic depth to Egyptian jewellery.

Necklaces and other items of personal adornment were valued for much more than their decorative appeal. Faience beads were believed to possess protective and regenerative qualities and could be worn as amuletic jewellery during life or placed among funerary equipment after death. Their brilliant surfaces and jewel-like appearance made them particularly effective carriers of symbolic meaning, combining beauty with beliefs surrounding protection, rebirth, and immortality.

The necklace is said to have originated from Naukratis, the important Egyptian-Greek trading centre situated in the Nile Delta. As a major centre of commerce and cultural interaction, Naukratis connected Egypt with the wider Mediterranean world, making its reported provenance particularly interesting in the context of ancient Egyptian material culture.

With its vivid palette, elegant arrangement, and deeply rooted symbolic associations, this faience necklace is an appealing example of ancient Egyptian jewellery. It combines the technical ingenuity of Egyptian faience production with the enduring spiritual significance of personal adornment, offering a tangible connection to the beliefs, craftsmanship, and everyday world of ancient Egypt.

Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions consistent with age; minor chips, nicks, and attractive patina, with traces of discolouration and earthly encrustations. Length approx. 83,5 cm.
