Nupe Cast Bronze Medicine Container

Early 20th century, Nupe people, Nigeria.

Fascinating, aged and finely cast bronze medicine container for storing herbal medicines or tobacco, with removable bronze lid are from the Nupe people, Nigeria. Sectionally cast in bronze and finished with fine overlaid designs. Two snakes placed around the lid section of the pouch, and another two larger snakes are underneath the lid on the base section. There are two suspension rings at the top, and decorative rings all around the bottom edge of the base. The Nupe people have lived in the heart of Nigeria, along the banks of the two rivers, Niger and Kaduna since the 15th century and were conquered in around 1830 by the Muslim Fulani people.  The Nupe are noted throughout Nigeria for glass beads, elaborate leather work, bronze, and fine cloth.

Good condition. Age-related minor wear and abrasion. Polished dark patina. Signs of  use, tarnish, some damage, one missing decorative ring, scrapes and small hole. Size approx. 21,5cm x 13,8cm x 3,3cm.
