Qijia Culture, c. 2300–1700 BC, Gansu Province, China
A fantastic and rare example of an early Bronze Age pottery vessel attributed to the Qijia Culture (c. 2300–1700 BC), one of the earliest bronze-producing societies of northwest China. The jar is hand-built from reddish earthenware with fine sand temper—added to prevent cracking during firing. Its surface displays natural variations in tone, ranging from pale yellowish-brown to deep orange-red, reflecting uneven kiln conditions.
Heavily potted and well-fired, the vessel features a globular body rising to a slightly constricted neck and an outward-flaring rim, all resting on a flat base. The lower two-thirds are decorated with diagonal cord impressions, while the neck bears three horizontal bands of triangular impressions—creating a striking textural contrast typical of Qijia ceramic aesthetics.
Named after the type-site of Qijiaping in Gansu Province, the Qijia Culture was a sedentary, agrarian society centered on farming and pig breeding—animals also used in ritual sacrifice. This jar exemplifies the transitional phase between Neolithic and Bronze Age China, embodying both technological innovation and artistic refinement in early ceramic production.
Excellent condition. Small area of repair to the mouth. Minor surface wear and abrasions consistent with age. Attractive encrusted patina and rich earthen deposits across the surface. Size approx. 15,0cm x 10,2cm x 10,0cm.
Provenance: British private collection.
