Qijia Culture Pottery Pitcher

Qijia Culture, c. 2300–1700 BC, Upper Yellow River Region of Gansu and Eastern Qinghai, China

A magnificent and rare early Bronze Age pottery pitcher attributed to the Qijia Culture, one of the earliest societies of northwestern China associated with the development and use of bronze. Hand-built from reddish earthenware tempered with fine sand, added to help reduce cracking during firing, the vessel displays appealing natural variations in colour ranging from pale yellowish-brown to deep orange-red. These subtle changes in tone are characteristic of uneven firing conditions within ancient kilns and contribute to the vessel's distinctive character.

Heavily potted and well fired, the pitcher features a substantial bulbous, barrel-shaped body rising to a cut-out domed cover. A short tubular spout projects from the upper front of the vessel, creating a practical pouring form while adding considerable visual interest to its profile.

A broad, flat strap handle connects the rim with the shoulder, providing a secure grip and balancing the rounded body of the vessel. The exterior is embellished with an attractive cord-impressed decoration consisting of horizontal and diagonally arranged combed lines, a characteristic decorative treatment associated with Qijia pottery. In addition to its ornamental quality, the textured surface may have offered an improved grip when handling the vessel with wet or slippery hands. The vessel is completed by a flat base.

Named after the type-site of Qijiaping in Gansu Province, the Qijia Culture represents an important transitional stage between the Neolithic and Bronze Age traditions of ancient China. The Qijia people lived primarily as settled agricultural communities, cultivating crops and practicing pig husbandry, while animals also played an important role in ritual activity and sacrificial practices.

This remarkable pitcher provides an evocative glimpse into the developing ceramic traditions of prehistoric northwestern China. Its robust construction, distinctive cord-impressed decoration, and unusual covered form combine practical ingenuity with an emerging sense of aesthetic design, making it a particularly appealing example of early Chinese pottery and an important reflection of the technological and cultural developments taking place during the transition into the Bronze Age.

Excellent condition. Intact. Minor surface wear and abrasions consistent with age. Attractive encrusted patina and rich earthen deposits across the surface. Size approx. 15,5cm x 14,1cm x 12,5cm.
