Qijia Culture, c. 2300–1700 BC, Gansu Province, China
A magnificent and rare early Bronze Age pottery jar attributed to the Qijia Culture (c. 2300–1700 BC), one of the earliest bronze-producing societies of northwestern China. Hand-built from reddish earthenware with fine sand temper—added to reduce cracking during firing—the vessel displays attractive natural variations in tone, ranging from pale yellowish-brown to deep orange-red, the result of uneven kiln conditions.
Heavily potted and well fired, the jar features a squat ovoid body rising to a constricted neck with a gently flaring rim, all supported on a flat base. Two small loop handles are applied on opposing sides of the neck, enhancing both the vessel’s functionality and its balanced, sculptural form.
Named after the type-site of Qijiaping in Gansu Province, the Qijia Culture represents a crucial transitional phase between Neolithic and Bronze Age China. A sedentary agrarian society, the Qijia people practiced farming and pig husbandry, with animals also playing a role in ritual sacrifice. This vessel is an evocative example of early ceramic craftsmanship, reflecting both technological innovation and an emerging aesthetic sensibility in prehistoric China.
Excellent condition. Small area of repair to the mouth. Minor surface wear and abrasions consistent with age. Attractive encrusted patina and rich earthen deposits across the surface. Size approx. 19,5cm x 12,5cm x 12,5cm.
Provenance: British private collection
