Qing Dynasty, Kangxi or Yongzheng Period, c. 1700–1735 AD, China
An exceptional and beautifully matched pair of biscuit porcelain incense holders, exquisitely modeled in mirror image. Each piece depicts a recumbent guardian lion resting atop a rectangular pedestal, its bushy tail curled neatly along its haunches. The heads are rendered with remarkable detail — fierce, animated expressions with semi-openwork jaws revealing sharp fangs. The surface is coated in a rich, lustrous chocolate-brown dip glaze, adding depth and warmth to the sculptural form.
Chinese guardian lions, also known as shishi (石獅) or “foo dogs” in the West, are iconic symbols of protection and power in Chinese art and architecture. Traditionally presented in male and female pairs — the male resting a paw upon a brocade ball (xiù qiú), representing material power, and the female nurturing a cub, symbolizing spiritual harmony — these figures were believed to guard against negative forces and malevolent spirits.
Originating in Chinese Buddhism, the motif became a widespread architectural and decorative emblem throughout East Asia, adorning palaces, temples, tombs, and homes as tokens of prosperity and divine guardianship. This rare pair, crafted during the refined artistry of the early Qing dynasty, beautifully captures both the vigor and auspicious symbolism of these revered protectors.
Excellent condition. Intact, there is no sign of restoration or repair. Surface wear consistent with age and use. Minimal fractures in glazing. Rough areas on the bottom. Bumpy surface, abrasion and minor pinholes. Size approx. 15,2cm x 9,5cm x 10,5cm & 15,2cm x 9,4cm x 10,5cm. Sell as a pair.
