Qing dynasty, Guangxu period (1875-1908), Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province, China.

Lovely porcelain brush pot (bitong) of cylindrical form with overall tan colored crackle ge glaze, hand painted in a slightly raised format with landscape, rounded rocks, peonies, foliage and various types of trees in underglaze blue with white ground and outline.

Set alongside the four treasures of the study, the calligraphy brush, ink, paper, and inkstone, a brush pot (bitong), was an essential icon of the scholars' desk. This lovely stoneware brush pot beautifully exemplifies this traditional form with the classical artistry of Chinese blue-and-white ceramics.

Bitong are in good condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Crazing, fritting and glazing flaws. Size approx. 12,0cm x 7,3cm x 7,2cm.
