Qing Dynasty Wooden Temple Figure of a Taoist Official
Qing Dynasty Wooden Temple Figure of a Taoist Official
Qing dynasty, 19th century or earlier, China.
A finely carved wooden figure representing a Taoist official, likely placed on a home altar to invoke blessings, summon positive energy, and ward off malevolent forces. This dignified figure, seated in a chair and clad in ornate official robes and a refined hat, reflects the high status and spiritual significance associated with Taoist religious icons.
The vibrant red and gilt pigmentation adorning the front and back of the figure symbolize happiness and wealth, key aspects of Chinese cultural beliefs. Carved from a single block of hard wood, the figure showcases intricate craftsmanship and attention to detail. Its serene, rounded face—characteristic of Ming and Qing artistry—features downcast eyes, a prominent nose, full lips, and elongated earlobes, symbolizing wisdom and holiness.
Such figures were essential to Chinese religious practices, often serving as household gods or temple icons. Many contained a concealed cavity at the back, sealed with a wooden lid, holding offerings such as rice, herbs, prayer scrolls, and textiles, believed to bring the statue to life and enhance its divine presence.
Dating to the Qing dynasty (1644–1912), this piece encapsulates the spiritual and cultural heritage of traditional Chinese craftsmanship. A timeless artifact, it stands as a testament to the artistry and deep devotion that permeated Qing-era religious practices, making it a remarkable addition for collectors and connoisseurs of East Asian art and history.
