Qing dynasty, 19th century, China.

An extraordinary and tranquil representation of Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, carved from a single block of hardwood. Revered as Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit, Guanyin embodies the divine attributes of mercy and kindness. Her name, meaning "observer of sounds," reflects her role as a listener to the prayers of those in need, offering solace and guidance.

This graceful small figure depicts Guanyin standing elegantly atop a stylized red rock base. Her right hand is raised to her chest, holding a beaded necklace, while her left hand cradles a gold ingot, symbolizing blessings of wealth and abundance. Her hair is arranged in a knotted coiffure framed by the folds of her outer garment, while her robes are adorned with lavish gilding. The vibrant red and gold hues, meticulously applied, signify joy and prosperity—key elements in Chinese culture.

The figure’s serene expression, a hallmark of Ming and Qing artistic traditions, is rendered with exceptional finesse. Her downcast eyes, delicately sculpted features, and elongated earlobes—symbols of wisdom and spiritual elevation—convey an aura of compassion and calmness. Figures such as this played a central role in Chinese religious practices, often positioned in temples or private altars as revered icons of devotion. Many included a concealed cavity at the back, sealed with a wooden lid and containing sacred offerings such as rice, herbs, textiles, or prayer scrolls. These offerings were believed to imbue the figure with life and a divine essence, enhancing its spiritual significance.

Dating to the Qing dynasty (1644–1912), this remarkable Guanyin sculpture represents the finest elements of traditional Chinese craftsmanship and devotion. A timeless artifact, it offers a unique glimpse into the cultural and spiritual heritage of East Asia and makes an exceptional addition for collectors and enthusiasts of historical and religious art.
