Roman Aubergine Glass Bottle

Late Roman Empire, c. 100–300 AD

A beautiful and finely blown Roman glass bottle of elegant elongated form, crafted in a rich translucent aubergine-coloured glass. The vessel stands on a small, flattened base beneath a gently tapering cylindrical body, rising through sloping shoulders into a long, slender neck that terminates in a funnel-shaped mouth with a neatly folded, flaring rim. The series of horizontal constrictions encircling the neck were deliberately formed using metal tongs while the glass remained hot, adding both decorative appeal and improved grip. The surface displays a deep purple-brown hue enhanced by attractive rainbow iridescence developed during centuries of burial.

By the early Imperial period, glassmaking had become one of the Roman Empire's most innovative and successful industries. The widespread adoption of free-blowing techniques by skilled vitriarii (glassmakers) revolutionised production, allowing vessels to be created more rapidly and in an extraordinary variety of forms. This technological advancement made glass increasingly accessible while also establishing it as one of the Empire's most important trade commodities, distributed throughout the Mediterranean and far beyond.

Roman glass was prized for its hygienic, non-porous qualities and was widely used to store perfumes, scented oils, medicines, cosmetics, and other valuable liquids. Advances in glassblowing enabled craftsmen to produce thinner, lighter vessels with greater clarity and elegance than had previously been possible. Colours were achieved by introducing various metallic oxides during manufacture, with the distinctive aubergine tone of this example produced through the addition of manganese to the glass.

An elegant and highly decorative vessel, this bottle beautifully illustrates the technical sophistication of Roman glassmakers and the enduring appeal of ancient coloured glass, making it an excellent example of one of the Roman world's finest artistic and commercial achievements.

Very fine condition. Intact with light deposits. Some internal air-bubbles throughout. Wear consistent with age and use. Size approx. 9,1cm x 2,5cm x 2,5cm.
