Roman Bronze Knee Fibula

Roman Empire, c. 100–200 AD, Province of Pannonia

A fabulous ancient Roman bronze knee fibula, an essential accessory for Roman soldiers. This finely crafted brooch features an elegantly arched bow with a stepped bulge at the center, a raised foot, and a large semicircular head plate, reflecting the functional yet sophisticated design typical of Roman military attire. The original pin remains securely in place within the long, narrow vertical catch-plate.

Fibulae were practical and decorative, serving as brooches or garment fasteners, primarily for securing cloaks and togas at the shoulder. Unlike most modern brooches, they followed the safety-pin principle and were often worn as status symbols or votive offerings to the gods.

The knee fibula was a distinctive 2nd-century AD design, originating in Roman Pannonia (modern Hungary). Unlike the crossbow fibulae, which signified rank in the Roman military and civil service, knee fibulae were almost exclusively worn by soldiers. They are rarely found outside military contexts, making this an exceptional and historically significant piece for collectors of Roman militaria and ancient artifacts.

Good condition. Hinge mechanism remains intact and partly mobile. Wear consistent with age and use. Bends, surface scratches and corrosion. Pin and spring heavily encrusted. Beautiful green patina with russet hues. Size approx. 3,3cm x 1,9cm x 1,8cm.
