Roman Bronze Lion Head Plaque

Roman, Imperial Period, c. 200 AD 

This charming small Roman bronze concave plaque is cast in high relief in the form of a powerful lion’s head. The animal is depicted with its mouth dramatically open, revealing a row of teeth, while the broad snout and almond-shaped eyes, with carefully delineated pupils, give the face an expressive and almost animated character. Fine incised lines define the flowing locks of the mane, adding depth and texture to the compact composition. Four small perforation holes along the plaque were used for attachment, suggesting that it was once mounted or affixed to another object.

Lions held an important symbolic position throughout the classical world, where they were associated with strength, power, wealth, courage, and might. Among the most celebrated stories involving a lion is the first labour of Herakles, who was commanded to defeat the formidable Nemean Lion. According to myth, the creature possessed an impenetrable golden hide and claws sharper than any human-made weapon, capable of cutting through even the strongest armour. Herakles ultimately overcame the beast by strangling it and thereafter wore its pelt as the enduring emblem of his extraordinary strength and heroic achievement.

The lion became one of the most enduring images of power in ancient art and appeared prominently in architecture, sculpture, coinage, and decorative objects. Monumental examples include the famous Lion Gate at Mycenae and the Terrace of the Lions on Delos, while the celebrated lion-hunt mosaic from Pella depicts Alexander the Great participating in the aristocratic pursuit of the formidable animal.

By the Roman Imperial period, the lion also carried strong associations with spectacle and the arena. Lions were among the exotic animals brought into Roman amphitheatres, where they were exhibited and forced to fight other formidable creatures, including tigers and bears. Their image consequently evoked not only the ancient heroic tradition but also the drama, danger, and spectacle of Roman society.

With its expressive modelling, finely incised mane, and beautifully compact form, this bronze lion head possesses a particularly appealing presence. Both decorative and richly symbolic, it offers a tangible connection to one of antiquity’s most enduring emblems of strength and authority, making it an attractive and highly displayable addition to a collection of Roman art and antiquities.

Excellent condition. Intact. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Bronze has developed a rich green patina over the ages. Size approx. 4,0cm x 3,4cm x 0,9cm.
