Roman Bronze Lock Key
Roman Bronze Lock Key
The Roman Empire, c. 100-200AD.
Fascinating ancient Roman era bronze key. Early Roman keys possessed technical finesse and elegance. They were primarily status symbols for those who had property to protect. Some keys also reflect the architecture of the day, made not only to fit into a lock, but also to look like the door the lock is in. Keys were used mainly for doors, chests, boxes, caskets, cupboards and padlocks. Less often they were used for ceremonial or decorative purposes, such as matron keys, jewelry items and votive offerings. A fine cast bronze lock key are in good condition. Age-related wear, abrasion and rich encrusted patina. Size approx. 7,1cm x 1,5cm x 0,9cm.
Provenance: Dutch private collection
