Roman Bronze Nail Cleaner

Roman Empire, c. 45–150 AD, England

A fascinating Roman bronze cosmetic nail cleaner, beautifully preserved and displaying the refined simplicity characteristic of Roman personal grooming implements. Expertly fashioned from a single piece of flat bronze, the object features a circular suspension loop—now slightly opened—pierced with a round aperture for attachment to a chain or toiletry set.

The loop connects to the main body through a short neck, oval in cross-section, which narrows as it joins the flat, leaf-shaped shaft. The stem terminates in a bifurcated tip designed for cleaning beneath the nails. A finely incised line runs along the length of the body and continues across the suspension loop, adding a subtle decorative accent to the otherwise restrained form.

The surface is enriched with a fine ancient patina of deep green and mottled grey tones, producing an attractive archaeological texture across the metal. Cosmetic implements such as this formed essential components of Roman daily life and were used by both men and women. They were often carried in compact toiletry sets alongside ear scoops, tweezers, and small vessels containing oils, perfumes, or cosmetic powders.

Personal grooming held significant social importance in Roman culture, where cleanliness and self-care were regarded as signs of civility and refinement.

Good condition. Light surface wear consistent with age and use. Fine encrusted grayish green patina. Corrosion and minimal dents. Size approx. 3,3cm x 1,0cm x 0,1cm.
