The Roman Empire, c. 100-200AD.

Fascinating Roman finger ring coarsely modelled in bronze. Rings were the most worn type of jewellery during the Roman period and were worn by men, women and children. They were made of gold, silver, copper, bronze, iron and glass and sometimes had precious stones and intaglios set in them. Finger rings were a sign of wealth, status, and knowledge. The Plebeians or the common people used cheaper rings made out of bronze, iron or other less expensive metals to reduce the cost of manufacture while displaying their social status. Golden rings were reserved for men of senatorial rank and for the bureaucrats.

Good condition. Intact. A fine green patina envelops in layers of mottled grayish hues.  Corrosion. Size approx. 2,0cm x 1,8cm x 0,4cm.

Provenance: Dutch private collection.
