Roman Empire, c. 100–200 AD
An absolutely fascinating example of Roman ingenuity, this bronze ring key combines practicality and elegance in a single object. The piece comprises a circular finger ring from which projects an angled key shaft terminating in a rectangular bit with carefully cut notches, designed to operate a small lock mechanism.
Ring keys are among the most distinctive forms of Roman personal accessories, reflecting both the sophistication of Roman lock technology and the realities of daily life. As Roman garments lacked pockets, important keys were often worn directly on the finger, ensuring that they remained secure and readily accessible. Such keys were commonly used to open small chests, caskets, cupboards, lockboxes, and other containers used for storing valuables, documents, jewelry, or household items.
The Romans developed a remarkable range of locking devices, and keys represent some of the most intriguing examples of their security hardware. While most served practical purposes, some keys also carried symbolic significance, functioning as status markers, items of personal adornment, or even votive offerings. Certain ring keys may have denoted authority within a household, particularly when associated with the management of domestic property and valuables.
Compact, functional, and beautifully conceived, this bronze ring key offers a direct connection to everyday life in the Roman world and stands as a testament to the technological skill and practicality of ancient Roman craftsmanship.
Good condition. The bronze surface exhibits a well-preserved olive-green patina with light earthen deposits and areas of brown and reddish oxidation, characteristic of ancient burial. Minor surface wear and small patches of encrustation are present, consistent with age. Size approx. 3,1cm x 2,0cm x 0,7cm.
