Roman Bronze Sewing Thimble
Roman Bronze Sewing Thimble
Later Roman Empire, c. 250-450AD, France
Fascinating pair of rare Late Roman sewing thimbles modelled in bronze, featuring thick, round body covered with small indented punch-marks and open top. A thimble is a small hard pitted cup worn for protection on the finger from being pricked by a needle while sewing. Usually, thimbles with a closed top are used by dressmakers but special thimbles with an opening at the end, such as this beautiful pair, were used by tailors, especially with thick fabrics or leather which require more puncturing force.
Very good condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Surface scratches and light corrosion. A fine green patina envelops in layers of mottled grayish hues. Light earthen deposits. Size approx. 2,3cm x 1,9cm and 1,2cm x 1,8cm. Sell as a pair.
Provenance: Private collection from Italy.
