The Roman Empire, c. 100–300 AD
Fabulous small-sized Roman zoomorphic copper-alloy bird finial, coarsely cast yet full of character. Likely once the decorative head of a rod or distaff, the figure takes the form of a dove or pigeon, with a downward-pointing beak, short neck, and long, thin tail. The underside is hollow, and the legs transition into an oval base pierced with five small perforations for attachment. A charming and evocative survivor of Roman utilitarian ornamentation.
Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age and use. A fine dark green patina envelops in layers of mottled grayish hues. Mineral encrustation and corrosion. Size approx. 4,0cm x 0,8cm x 2,2cm.
Provenance: Dutch private collection
