Roman Glass Flask with Funnel Mouth

A splendid example of Roman craftsmanship, this clear glass flask showcases a vertical rim and an elegant funnel-shaped mouth, with a gracefully tapering neck leading to a globular body. The flask rests on a flattened base, slightly indented at the center—a testament to the skill and precision of ancient Roman glassmakers.

The Roman Empire revolutionized glassmaking over 2,000 years ago, producing both utilitarian and decorative pieces that remain timeless in their beauty. Roman glass, commonly made from soda-lime glass, was a blend of silica (sand), sodium, and calcium oxides, often enriched with traces of potassium, magnesium, and aluminum oxides. Artisans mastered the use of various minerals to create a dazzling palette of colors. Copper was used to produce hues from turquoise to light blue, green, and red, while cobalt achieved a rich, dark blue. Manganese and antimony created vibrant yellows, whites, and purples, and iron offered shades of light blue, green, brown, and black. These colors were often chosen to mimic the appearance of precious gemstones like lapis lazuli, amethyst, and turquoise, elevating glassware to a luxurious art form.

This particular flask is a remarkable example of Roman ingenuity, marrying form and function with aesthetic appeal. Its clarity and craftsmanship exemplify the technological advancements and artistic sophistication of the Roman glass industry, making it a prized relic of the ancient world.

Excellent condition. Complete and intact. Gorgeous patina and age-induced wear occur. The surface of the exterior and interior is calcified and encrusted with minerals over the years. Size approx. 11,9cm x 8,0cm x 8,2cm.
