Roman Republic, c. 200–100 BC

A fascinating and evocative artifact from the battlefield of antiquity—an original cast lead sling bullet (glans), used by Roman or allied forces during the late Republican period. Cast in a roughly ellipsoidal form, this aerodynamic projectile is designed for maximum velocity and impact. Its small size and leaden composition made it especially difficult to detect in flight and deadly in skilled hands.

The Latin term glandes plumbeae—literally "leaden acorns"—refers to this bullet’s distinctive shape, resembling an acorn, which enhanced aerodynamic efficiency. These missiles were often cast with inscribed messages, symbols, or personal insignias, although this example is unmarked, likely made for rapid battlefield use.

Slinging was a highly effective ancient military tactic, especially for light infantry and skirmishers. Among the most feared practitioners were the Balearic slingers, mercenaries recruited by Carthage and later employed by Rome. These specialists used different-sized slings for varying ranges, their weapons crafted from plant fibers or sinew, launching stone or lead projectiles with astonishing power and precision.

This particular sling bullet offers a tangible link to Rome’s Republican-era military technology, reflecting the brutal pragmatism and strategic ingenuity that helped forge one of history’s greatest empires. Compact yet powerful, such an object embodies the lethal artistry of ancient warfare.

Excellent condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, nicks and chip, with encrusted patina and rich earthen deposits throughout. Size approx. 4,3cm x 1,6cm x 1,4cm.
