Roman Republic, c. 200–100 BC
A compelling and evocative artifact of ancient warfare—this original cast lead sling bullet (glans) dates to the late Roman Republic, a period marked by military innovation and relentless expansion. Ellipsoidal in shape, this compact projectile was cast in lead for optimal weight and velocity, capable of inflicting lethal damage when hurled with precision by trained slingers.
The Latin term glandes plumbeae, meaning “leaden acorns,” refers to the bullet’s streamlined, acorn-like form—designed for aerodynamic efficiency. While many examples bear inscribed slogans, symbols, or owners’ marks, this example remains unadorned, likely produced quickly for use in the field.
Slinging was a versatile and highly effective technique employed by light infantry and skirmishers throughout the ancient Mediterranean world. Among the most formidable were the Balearic slingers—renowned mercenaries who served Carthaginian and later Roman forces with devastating effectiveness. Using slings made from woven fibers or sinew, they could launch these projectiles at extraordinary speeds across considerable distances.
This unassuming object, once a weapon of war, offers a rare, tangible connection to the battlefield strategies and practical engineering that underpinned Rome’s rise to imperial dominance. Simple in form yet deadly in function, the lead glans stands as a stark reminder of the brutal realities of ancient combat—and the calculated precision of Roman military design.
