The Roman Empire, c. 200–400 AD
A robust and characterful wheel-thrown coarse ware pottery jug, exemplifying the utilitarian ceramic traditions of Roman North Africa. The vessel is defined by a tall, ovoid "baggy" body that gently tapers upward to a short neck and an out-turned rim. A single strap handle extends from the rim to the shoulder, completing its practical form. The lower body is accented by subtle horizontal ridging, created on the potter’s wheel, while the vessel rests on a flattened base.
Crafted from a coarse grey ceramic fabric enriched with abundant fine mica inclusions, the jug is now heavily worn, with surface porosity and a small chip to the rim—testament to its considerable antiquity and burial history. Prominent wheel marks remain visible on both the interior and exterior, attesting to its expert shaping.
Coarse wares such as this were the workhorses of the Roman world, used widely for everyday storage and transport of foodstuffs, water, or wine. Produced in vast quantities in Roman North Africa, these vessels were traded across the empire, valued for their durability and straightforward elegance. This example offers a compelling glimpse into the rhythms of daily life under Rome—practical, enduring, and unmistakably authentic.
