The Roman Empire, c. 200–400 AD
A handsome wheel-thrown redware terracotta bowl, characteristic of Roman North African pottery. The vessel features a deep hemispherical body with gracefully curving convex sides, a thin, neatly defined lip, and an outsplayed ring base with a smoothly rounded edge.
Formed from a light cream fabric with mica inclusions, the surface is coated in a now heavily worn, thin brick-red slip—a hallmark of Roman fineware traditions. Both the interior and exterior display prominent wheel marks, evidence of its expert shaping on the potter’s wheel. A small chip to the rim and areas of porosity speak to its age and long burial history, lending it an authentic patina.
This elegant utilitarian vessel reflects the widespread distribution of North African wares across the Roman Empire, prized for both their practicality and distinctive style.
Good condition. Intact. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, nicks and chip, with lime deposits throughout. Size approx. 10,5cm x 10,6cm x 6,2cm.
Provenance: British private collection.
