Roman North African Terracotta Bowl

The Roman Empire, c. 200–400 AD

A charming example of Roman North African redware, this small wheel-thrown terracotta bowl embodies the refined simplicity and functional elegance characteristic of provincial Roman pottery. The vessel features a deep hemispherical body with gently curving convex sides, a thin, precisely formed lip, and an outsplayed ring base with a smoothly rounded edge.

Crafted from a light cream clay fabric with visible mica inclusions, the bowl is coated in a now time-worn brick-red slip—typical of Roman finewares and particularly associated with African Red Slip (ARS) pottery. Both the interior and exterior bear distinct wheel-throwing marks, a testament to the artisan’s skill and the vessel’s hand-crafted origins. Minor rim chipping and surface porosity further attest to its antiquity and burial history, enhancing its tactile authenticity.

Widely traded across the Mediterranean world, North African ceramics were celebrated for their durability, elegant forms, and efficient production. This modest yet finely made bowl reflects the essential role of such wares in daily Roman life, as well as the expansive trade networks that connected distant corners of the empire.

Good condition. Intact. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, nicks and chip, with lime deposits throughout. Size approx. 9,0cm x 9,1cm x 5,5cm.
