Roman Empire, c. 50–200 AD, Richborough, England

A rare and endearing fragment of a Roman roof tile (tegula) bearing the distinct impression of a dog’s paw, discovered at Richborough in England. The print clearly preserves the central pad and one pronounced toe mark—an intimate and spontaneous trace of everyday life nearly two millennia old.

Roman roof tiles were formed from clay pressed into molds, then left to dry in the open air before firing. During this vulnerable drying stage, it was not uncommon for animals—or occasionally children—to wander across the surface, leaving accidental impressions that were permanently captured in the fired clay. Archaeological examples record prints from dogs, sheep, pigs, and other domestic animals, offering rare glimpses into the lived environment of Roman settlements.

To construct a waterproof roof, flat tegulae were laid side by side, while curved imbrices were placed over the raised edges to seal the joins and channel rainwater efficiently away. This interlocking system was widely used throughout the Roman Empire and exemplifies the practical engineering of Roman architecture.

Both evocative and personal, this charming fragment transcends its humble function. It captures a fleeting moment—a dog trotting across a drying tile—preserved by chance and time. A scarce and highly appealing Roman artifact, equally desirable to collectors of classical antiquities and admirers of our ancient canine companions.

Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, nicks and chip. Encrusted earthen deposits throughout. Size approx. 9,0cm x 6,8cm x 2,2cm.

Provenance: British private collection, acquired in the 1930s. Retains an old collection label reading: “Roman Tile Bearing Imprint Of Dog’s Paw. Richborough, 1937.” affixed to the underside.
