Roman Terracotta Flagon

Roman Empire, c. 100–200 AD

A finely potted Roman terracotta flagon, remarkable for its balance of utility and elegance. Formed from a light brown-orange fine-grained clay, the vessel displays a globular body with a slightly projecting midsection, rising to a narrow conical neck with a funnel-shaped rim, neatly offset from the body. A delicately grooved collar defines the junction of neck and shoulders, while subtle wheel-ridging adds texture to the surface. The vessel rests on a low, broad foot with a recessed underside, and a strap handle of rectangular section extends gracefully from neck to shoulder.

Terracotta flagons of this type were indispensable in Roman domestic life, commonly used for pouring wine, water, or oil at the table. Their sturdy yet refined construction embodies the Roman ability to merge practicality with aesthetic form.

With its warm earthen tone and well-preserved shape, this example provides not only a glimpse into the rhythms of everyday life in the Roman world but also a testament to the enduring artistry of Roman ceramic production. A superb piece for collectors of classical antiquities.
