Roman Terracotta Miniature Vessel

Roman Empire, c. 100–300 AD

An elegant and well-preserved Roman terracotta miniature vessel, dating to circa 200 AD. This finely wheel-thrown jarlet features a globular, apple-shaped body, a wide mouth, and a shallow, thick rim, likely designed to accommodate a now-lost lid. The rounded shoulders gently taper to a slightly protruding flat foot, ensuring stability. Faint traces of dark pigmentation on the surface hint at its ancient use and handling.

These versatile vessels were common across the Roman Empire, serving both domestic and military purposes. Used for storing perfumed oils, unguents, and other valuable substances, they also held ceremonial and votive significance in temples and religious rituals. Their widespread presence underscores their practical and symbolic roles in Roman daily life.

Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Small chip and nicks in the rim and base, otherwise intact. Lime deposits and multiple root marks. Surface encrusted in places. Size approx. 3,2cm x 3,6cm x 3,7cm.

Provenance: Swedish private collection. The object was acquired in the early 1960’s from Paris, France.
