Roman Empire, c. 100–300 AD

A beautiful pair of finely preserved Roman terracotta miniature vessels, expertly wheel-thrown and elegantly proportioned, dating to the height of the Roman Empire. One example presents a rounded, slightly compressed body with a wide mouth and delicately shaped rim—originally intended to receive a lid. Its subtly tapering shoulders rise from a flat, projecting base, creating a harmonious and balanced silhouette. The second vessel is a shallow miniature dish with gently everted sides and a slightly concave base, simple yet refined in execution.

Miniature vessels such as these were far more than modest containers. They commonly held perfumed oils, precious unguents, cosmetics, or medicinal preparations, serving both domestic and military life. At the same time, they fulfilled important ritual functions, frequently deposited as votive offerings in temples or employed in ceremonies dedicated to the gods. Their widespread presence across the empire reflects the intimate relationship between commerce, personal care, and spirituality in Roman society.

Terracotta vessels of this type are well attested throughout the provinces of the Roman Empire, illustrating both standardized production techniques and regional variation. The warm reddish patina acquired over centuries enhances their surface character and authenticity.

This rare and appealing pair offers a tangible link to the daily routines and sacred observances of antiquity—an elegant testament to the enduring craftsmanship and cultural sophistication of the Roman world.

Good condition. Surface wear, chip and abrasions commensurate with age and use, otherwise intact. Lime deposits and multiple root marks. Beautiful russet encrustation. Size approx. 2,3cm x 4,1cm x 4,2cm & 1,0cm x 4,0cm x 4,0cm.

Provenance: Swedish private collection. The object was acquired in the early 1960’s from Paris, France.
