The Roman Empire, c. 100-300AD.

Magnificent, mold-made terracotta oil lamp featuring a large, rounded body with a rounded nozzle. A lug handle is placed at the rear of the lamp. The discus is decorated with dancing Satyr or Cupid, in deep relief. The flattened shoulders embellished with geometric motifs of dots and lines. Two concentric circles frame the small filling hole (discus).

Small-sized earthenware oil lamps, made from double molds, were used in temples, churches, synagogues, and mosques but were also one of the most essential household appliances in antiquity. A wick produced from plant fiber or linen fabric was placed in a reservoir filled with oil, generally castor or sesame oil, and illuminated. 

Moderate condition. Age-related heavy wear with light deposits Traces of greenish gray slip. Reverse with large chip, otherwise intact. Gorgeous patina. Size approx. 11,5cm x 8,4cm x 5,0cm.
