The Roman Empire, c. 100–300 AD
A magnificent example of Roman mold-made terracotta craftsmanship, this elegant oil lamp features a large, rounded body and a gracefully formed rounded nozzle. A sturdy lug handle is positioned at the rear, ensuring ease of use.
The discus is adorned with a striking deep-relief depiction of a dancing Satyr or Cupid, an evocative motif that reflects themes of revelry, love, and mythology in Roman culture. The flattened shoulders are further embellished with geometric patterns of dots and lines, adding a decorative touch to this functional artifact. Two concentric circles elegantly frame the small filling hole (discus), drawing attention to the lamp’s finely executed design.
Though bearing a large chip on the reverse, the lamp remains otherwise intact—an impressive survivor from antiquity. Such oil lamps were essential in Roman homes, temples, churches, synagogues, and mosques, providing illumination for both daily life and sacred rituals. Designed to hold castor or sesame oil, these lamps burned with the help of plant-fiber or linen wicks, offering a warm, steady glow to their ancient users.
A rare and highly collectible artifact from the 1st–3rd century AD, this piece is a tangible connection to the artistry and mythology of the Roman world—an ideal acquisition for any serious collector of antiquities.
Moderate condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, nicks and chip, with fading to some finer features, and light encrustations within recessed areas. Reverse with large chip, otherwise intact. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Size approx. 11,5cm x 8,4cm x 5,0cm.
