Roman to Post-Medieval Period, c. 40–1700 AD

A fine and evocative group of three substantial cast lead-alloy trading weights, spanning a broad chronological range from the Roman through the Post-Medieval period. Each weight is formed as a circular disc, robust and utilitarian in character. The undersides display multiple irregular indentations and scars, the result of prolonged practical use and repeated handling over centuries.

Lead weights were in continuous use throughout the Roman, Medieval, and Post-Medieval periods, and their basic form changed very little over time. This long continuity makes precise dating challenging; however, such objects are well attested in commercial and market contexts across Europe for over a millennium.

All three weights exhibit an attractive, soft mid-white patina, developed naturally through age and burial, enhancing their visual appeal and underscoring their authenticity. Together, they form a compelling group that speaks to everyday trade, commerce, and measurement practices across successive historical periods.

Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions consistent with age and use. Attractive encrusted patina and rich earthen deposits across the surface. The weights range in size from approximately 4,0cm wide for the largest to 3,5cm wide for the smallest. Sell as a set.

Provenance: British private collection.
