Romano-British Culture, c. 100–200 AD, Britain
An excellent and finely cast example of a Romano-British openwork plate brooch, crafted in bronze and displaying a sophisticated combination of symmetry and ornamental design. The brooch features an elongated eye-shaped form with centrally recessed concentric rings, lending it a sense of layered dimensionality. Along the central rib, delicate openwork patterns create a striking visual texture, likely intended to mimic filigree or to reflect light when worn.
Both ends of the brooch are equal in design—an attribute common to early 2nd-century Romano-British brooches, merging Celtic decorative flair with Roman technological influence. While the reverse still reveals traces of the original hinge and pin fittings, these functional components have unfortunately been lost to time.
Brooches such as this served both decorative and utilitarian purposes in Roman Britain, fastening garments while also acting as personal adornment and markers of identity. The skilled openwork and balanced composition of this example reflect the high level of craftsmanship and cultural synthesis achieved in provincial Roman workshops.
This brooch stands as a testament to the artistry and adaptation of local traditions under Roman rule—an evocative piece ideal for collectors of ancient jewelry or Romano-British artifacts.
Excellent condition. Intact. Light surface wear and corrosion commensurate with age. Lovely dark green patina and earthen deposits. Size approx. 13,2cm x 4,3cm x 0,4cm.
Provenance: Swedish private collection.
