Romano-Egyptian Frog Pottery Oil Lamp
Romano-Egyptian Frog Pottery Oil Lamp
Roman Period, c. 100-300AD, Naukratis, Egypt
An extraordinary example of Roman Egyptian pottery, this frog oil lamp showcases the distinctive artistry and symbolism of the period. Made from thick grey clay, this egg-shaped oil lamp features a carinated body and a raised frog motif viewed from above. The frog design is intricately surrounded by raised bosses and depressions, and a circular central hole with a ring detailing adds depth to the reservoir. The lamp's projecting nozzle is elegantly adorned with incised linear patterns, and its rilled base reveals a finely incised palm frond motif and the workshop mark, a legged 'A' - a testament to its unique craftsmanship.
Frogs were powerful symbols in ancient Egyptian culture, closely linked to the goddess Heqet, deity of childbirth, fertility, and rebirth. The presence of a frog on this lamp would have evoked these vital life-affirming qualities, reinforcing the lamp’s symbolic connection to fertility and renewal. This significance endured in early Christian symbolism, where frogs, the vine branch, and the ankh symbolized rebirth and resurrection, making this lamp an emblem of enduring spiritual beliefs.
Produced exclusively in Egypt from the 2nd to 4th centuries AD, this lamp captures the fusion of Roman and Egyptian aesthetics, embodying a captivating blend of cultural motifs and spiritual resonance. This piece is a rare find, a lasting symbol of life, fertility, and regeneration that would elevate any collection of ancient artifacts. Own a piece of history that reflects the profound syncretism of two iconic civilizations.
