Sasanian Empire, c. 224–651 AD, Iran

A finely crafted ancient hematite stamp seal, distinguished by its ring-shaped form and engraved oval bezel. The bezel bears a divine symbol or motif, possibly incorporating Pahlavi script, set against the stone’s lustrous silvery-black surface. Pierced horizontally through the centre, the seal could have been suspended from a cord or worn as a personal ornament, combining practical function with decorative appeal.

Stamp seals played an important role in daily life throughout the Sasanian Empire, serving as personal marks of identity and authority. They were used to authenticate documents, secure goods, and identify their owners, while also expressing social status and potentially carrying protective or symbolic significance.

The art of seal engraving, known as glyptic art, had deep roots in the ancient Near East. Mesopotamia was one of its earliest centres, where cylinder seals emerged during the 4th millennium BC. Over the following millennia, successive civilizations developed increasingly sophisticated engraving techniques and visual traditions. Sasanian craftsmen inherited this rich legacy, drawing upon earlier Mesopotamian, Babylonian, and Assyrian influences while establishing a distinctive artistic language of their own. Sasanian seals are particularly noted for their concise, carefully balanced compositions, featuring animals, mythical creatures, human figures, and symbolic motifs rendered with an emphasis on clarity and meaning.

A distinctive example of Sasanian glyptic art, this engraved hematite seal offers a tangible connection to the administrative practices, personal identities, and artistic traditions of one of the great empires of the ancient Near East. Its dark, lustrous surface and enigmatic engraved motif make it an appealing addition to a collection of ancient seals, Sasanian antiquities, or Near Eastern material culture.

Good condition. Minor surface wear, abrasion and small patches of encrustation are present, consistent with age. Size approx. 2,2cm x 1,4cm x 1,8cm.

Provenance: From the collection of Harald Egon Stridh (b. 1935), Stockholm. Acquired through auction purchases in Sweden during the 1960s and 1970s.
