Teotihuacan Green Stone Miniature Mask

Pre-Columbian Era, Teotihuacan, c. 450–600 AD, Valley of Mexico

An absolutely fascinating small-sized male mask, harshly hand-carved from a mottled dark-green stone with light and dark inclusions, this exquisite piece originates from the Teotihuacan culture in the Valley of Mexico, dating to approximately 400–600 AD. The miniature mask features strikingly angular and stylized facial characteristics, including thin almond-shaped eyes, which are accentuated by arching eyelids and brows. A prominent triangular nose, with drilled nostrils adds to the dramatic expression, while the gaping mouth with full lips enhances the intensity of the piece.

One of the most distinctive features is the bar-shaped ears, with one still preserving a large ear spool—a disc with a perfectly rounded orb at its center. Such masks were likely used in ceremonial contexts, possibly attached to larger figures or worn as part of elaborate ritual attire. The artistry and craftsmanship evident in this piece highlight the refined lapidary skills of Teotihuacan artisans, reflecting the city's complex religious and cultural traditions.

Moderate condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, nicks and chip, with fading to some finer features, and light encrustations within recessed areas. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Size approx. 3,7cm x 7,1cm x 1,2cm.

Provenance: Collection of Sven Borgström (1928-2022) and Harriet Borgström (1923-2022). The object was acquired in between 1950-1970.
