Pre-Columbian Era, c. 400–600 AD, Teotihuacan, Valley of Mexico

An exceptional and rare hand-built pottery figure depicting a seated male of elite or noble status, likely representing a chieftain or lord. The figure is shown seated cross-legged with both hands resting on the knees, wearing an applied circular loincloth or belt—an attribute associated with authority and rank.

The characteristically triangular face displays a striking and expressive visage, with coffee-bean–shaped eyes, a relatively naturalistic nose, and slightly parted lips. The facial planes are skilfully contoured and surmounted by a pointed coiffure or headdress. Richly adorned in the manner of a high-status individual, the figure wears large ear spools, bangles, and an elaborate pectoral. Fine detailing is evident throughout, including the carefully delineated fingers and toes.

The surface preserves traces of original red and white pigments, offering insight into the vibrant polychrome appearance the figure would once have displayed. Darkened areas resulting from burnishing further enhance the sculptural depth and visual presence of the piece.

Figurines from Teotihuacan played an important role in ritual practice, funerary offerings, and elite commemoration. This example, with its elaborate headdress and prominent ear spools—clear symbols of elevated status—likely represents a noble individual or revered personage. The open mouth and half-closed eyes suggest a trance-like or altered state, possibly connected to ritual or hallucinogenic practices within ceremonial contexts.

A rare and evocative survival, this seated figure offers a tangible connection to the grandeur, ritual life, and social hierarchy of Teotihuacan—one of the greatest urban civilizations of ancient Mesoamerica. A true collector’s piece, it embodies both artistic mastery and deep cultural significance.

Excellent condition. Intact. Light surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, with fading to some finer features, and light encrustations within recessed areas. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Size approx. 6,7cm x 4,0cm x 3,9cm.

Provenance: Swedish private collection
