Pre-Columbian Era, c. 450–600 AD, Valley of Mexico

A striking relic from the heart of ancient Mesoamerica, this small-sized terracotta head once belonged to a full effigy figurine, crafted with remarkable skill in the great city of Teotihuacan. Dating to approximately 450–600 AD, it is a testament to the sophisticated artistry and spiritual depth of this influential civilization.

Teotihuacan figurines played a vital role in religious ceremonies, burial offerings, and elite commemorations. This piece, with its elaborate headdress and prominent earspools—symbols of high status—likely represents a noble figure or a revered individual. The open mouth and half-closed eyes suggest a trance-like or hallucinogenic state, possibly linked to ritualistic practices. Faint traces of white pigment hint at the vibrant polychrome decoration that once adorned it, making it even more striking in its original form.

A rare and evocative artifact, this terracotta head offers a tangible connection to the grandeur and mystery of Teotihuacan’s past. A true collector’s piece, it embodies the artistic and cultural legacy of one of Mesoamerica’s greatest civilizations.

Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, nicks and chip, with fading to some finer features, and light encrustations within recessed areas. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Size approx. 3,3cm x 3,4cm x 1,9cm.

Provenance: Collection of Sven Borgström (1928-2022) and Harriet Borgström (1923-2022). The object was acquired in between 1950-1970.
